Achilleion Palace, Corfu

Located in the scenic area of Gastouri, south of Corfu, the Achilleion Palace is a historic gem that reflects the island’s rich heritage. Originally a more modest structure, the palace was purchased and extensively renovated by Empress Elizabeth of Austria, also known as Sissy. Enchanted by Corfu’s natural beauty and its stunning sea views, Sissy envisioned the palace as a private retreat dedicated to the legendary Greek hero Achilles.

The transformation of the building into a grand palace was overseen by an Italian architect, resulting in an opulent residence adorned with classical themes. The palace grounds feature magnificent gardens where a prominent statue of Achilles stands, symbolizing the Empress’s admiration for the hero.

Since 1982, the Greek government has utilized the palace as a museum, allowing visitors to explore its historical and artistic significance. Today, the Achilleion Palace is open to the public, offering a fascinating glimpse into its royal past and the exquisite art and architecture that adorn its interiors and gardens.
